Primary Services Explained:

REFLEXOLOGY

This involves the use of manual pressure on reflex points found in the feet and hands. The 'reflex' in the word 'reflexology' is used in the context of 'reflection' or mirror image. The reflexes found in the soles of the feet or the palms of the hands act as small mirrors that reflect the whole organism, in this case, the human body. Reflexology also recognises that a vital energy or life force circulates between the body's organs. If there is a blockage in this energy then any related reflex point will be affected. A Reflexologist will use specific pressure techniques to dissipate energy blocks and break down crystalline structures. The blood and lymphatic circulatory systems are stimulated encouraging the release of toxins and wastes - thus promoting the body's healing mechanisms. The benefits of reflexology:

•Reduces stress and induces deep relaxation •Improves circulation

•Encourages elimination of toxins and impurities from the body

•Boosts the immune system

•Balances the 'whole' system

•Revitalises energy

•Clears the mind aiding creativity and productivity

•Preventative healthcare

AROMATHERAPY

The word 'Aromatherapy' was first used in the 20th century but the use of aromatic oils on the body or in baths, compresses or inhalations can be traced back to at least 2000 years B.C. probably to China then via the Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans. The Egyptians used plants and essential oils in cosmetics and for embalming the dead. The Bible documents the use of plants and their oils for the treatment of illnesses and for religious purposes.

INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE (IHM)

This has been used in India for at least 2000 years and even today plays an important part in family life. The techniques were originally developed by women and used within their family and friendship groups on babies, children and adults. A variety of oils, herbs and spices, with known therapeutic properties, were used during treatments to help relieve common scalp conditions as well as improving the lustre and condition of the hair. IHM treats the head, neck, shoulders and upper back. It is a relaxing therapy that is safe and very effective at relieving aches and pains, stress and rebalancing energy flow to promote a deep sense of peace and contentment. The treatment is received seated so it is suitable for people who are unable or uncomfortable being in a prone position. The benefits of IHM are similar to body massage and can be achieved quickly so it is particularly suited to people with busy lives. It is ideal for people looking for an alternative to body massage or just as an introduction to a "hands on" therapy.

MASSAGE

This is the term used to describe manual manipulation of the soft tissues of the body to produce beneficial effects on the nervous, muscular and respiratory systems. Body massage will also improve the general circulation of the blood and lymph. Treatment concentrates on relaxing areas of tension trapped within the muscles and connective tissue of the body. When combined with Aromatherapy the therapeutic dynamics are greatly enhanced because scented essential oils can have a powerful effect on mental and emotional levels while the chemicals in the oils go to work on the physical body. The benefits of massage:

•Releases muscle tension. As muscles relax, stiff joints will loosen and nerves will be soothed.

•Improves blood circulation. This is vital for the healthy functioning of the body's systems as well as muscles, organs and skin.

•The lymphatic system will be encouraged to function effectively. This is important because the lymph system removes toxins and waste from tissues; oedema (fluid retention) can occur when the lymph system is overloaded in a particular area.

•Boosts the immune system.

•Aids digestion by stimulating abdominal peristalsis.

REIKI

Reiki (pronounced "Ray-key") is a simple Japanese self-healing, energy-balancing, spiritual development system that is used by thousands of people all over the world. It is most well known as a sort of hands-on treatment technique with most Reiki "practitioners" using Reiki for their own benefit by working with energy and treating themselves! Anyone can benefit from Reiki, whether you have learned Reiki for yourself or received a course of Reiki treatments from a practitioner. Here are some of the things that are possible through Reiki
