Fitness Training for Archery
As well as managing the Steps to wellness Directory I am a Personal Fitness Specialist, indeed that is one of the reasons why I created the Directory (however that is an article of its own). I take clients on that have special circumstances for training like rehabilitation and sport specific training and have worked with Sara who has made such outstanding progress she wished to tell about it in our newsletter.
Sara came to me frustrated as she was getting low scores in her sport, Archery as well as being over weight. She has been training now for two months and her progress has helped her attain two medals! Here’s how we did it.
Sara has diabetes as well as peripheral neuropathy (the attacking and destruction of the sensory nerves), her co - ordination is unstable due to no feelings in her feet, and she also had to be careful due to a complex operation on her knee. I created a workout for her designed to meet her sport specific needs as well as lowering her weight. At first she was on the recumbent cycle for 10 minutes that has now increased to 30, and the weights she was lifting at the start of her training have increased too. The equipment she uses in the gym is sometimes adapted for rehabilitation needs. Her training at this time is seated due to coordination problems however she feels that the leg training is providing greater stability. The image to the right shows me indicating how deltoid muscle in the shoulder can be strengthened in time, aiding stability of the forearm when holding the bow.
Since Sara has been in training her scores in Archery have soared. Sara attained the Winter Season Medal for a 475 score out of a possible 600 and attained 2nd place in division 9 of the National Virtual Archery League gaining the Silver medal, a4s well as her sport achievements she has nearly lost a stone in weight.
