Our mission
Fitness has always been my focus as well as helping and encouraging others in being more healthy.
In 1982 I became a wheelchair user for a while due to a Brain Aneurism and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Before this, I was a happy 12 year old without a care in the world. The operations and physiotherapy involved were on going. With my knowledge of fitness, assistance from my family and physiotherapist, I began the road to recovery.
I soon recognised that the assistance available from the health service was limited as to the help they could provide and so I took it upon myself to learn how to get my body back – returning the coordination of the right hand side of my body and overall strength. From 12 to 24 there were not only physical problems but also a host of mental health problems such as depression, anger, amnesia and fatigue to deal with. I soon realised that the mental health problems were suppressed with my continued fitness training. I eventually overcame many physical and mental health related problems, now tackling the remainder of them. I continue to weight train and have my own program of rehabilitation.
Since 1991 I have wanted to create the ideal environment for people with disabilities and those who are in the position of needing access to recovery – in all, provide what was not there for my parents to bring me back to good health. I attained many qualifications so as to be able to help both able bodied and disabled individuals to reach the physical and mental state they want to be in. Whilst doing this, I have worked in many different environments related to fitness and health.
In 2007 I created Well Fit, a directory for wellness and fitness professionals in Cornwall, this was the first step in many plans to bring maximum health provision together in one location. In 2009 we re branded Well Fit to Steps to wellness so as to accommodate those within the UK that are involved in wellness and fitness. At this time the directory has 1780 listings and emails almost 3000 across the UK.
The mission? As mentioned, a resource such as Steps to wellness was not available to my parents or the world of western medicine and so my progress in getting rehabilitation has been slow and hindered, I aim to provide a central location point for anyone seeking anything health related. Steps to wellness have all ready excelled from being a directory to a source of information and will not stop there.
The Directory is part of a much bigger picture. I have aspirations that have been on my mind and strived towards since 1992. When you become a part of Steps to wellness you become a part of a community. Please tell everyone you know that has anything to do with wellness and fitness to get listed here free.
