The Natural Medicine Clinic was set up by Tim and Sylvia Salisbury in 2001. They run their therapy centre from the midst of their 9 acre smallholding in Park Bottom which is near Illogan. The venue has been described as “an idyllic, tranquil, oasis”. Tim is qualified in Herbal Medicine, Hopi ear candling, Flower essences and is also a Reiki Master and Teacher. Sylvia is a qualified Reflexologist, Holistic Crystal therapist, Indian Head Massage practitioner and Reiki Master too. Tim is also available to give talks, lectures and demonstrations to groups on Herbs and their uses. Both Tim and Sylvia hold current First Aid Certificates and are registered and insured with professional bodies.

Between them Tim and Sylvia are able to bring their experience to bear in treating a wide range of complaints – both acute and chronic.

One of Tim’s recent cases involved a Gentleman who had been previously been treated for prostate problems by means of Radiotherapy. Unfortunately, after several years, the problem was returning and he was unhappy at the thought that his only option was surgery. Having taken an intensive case history Tim was able to engineer a prescription specific to the patient who responded extremely well to treatment and he is now some 3years further on, never had the surgery and is back enjoying his hobbies and life in general.

The vast majority of the herbs that are used in making Tim’s medicines are grown at their smallholding. This means that Tim knows exactly what herbs are used and their quality. The major advantage that this system offers is that the plants are exposed to the same environmental conditions as his patients and he believes that this makes them more effective plus Tim is able to ensure that they are not exposed to harmful pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilisers.

Herbal medicine is one of the oldest types of medicine known to mankind and even in these modern times over 90% of the worlds medicine is plant derived. These plant based medicines are used to treat a vast array of complaints. Tim studied Herbal Medicine (and is registered) with the I.R.C.H. (The International Register of Consultant Herbalists and Homeopaths) and he believes in a truly holistic approach to his treatments and this involves taking a complete case history (the initial consultation takes at least 1.5hrs) to include a true dietary record. Occasionally there may be a physical examination involved but generally this is not required. From the information that he gathers Tim tries to find out what the underlying cause of a condition is and then engineers a prescription that is specific to each patient’s needs.
This may take the form of a tincture, some capsules, an ointment, or may be as simple as some herbal teas depending on the severity of the case.

Tim is an experienced speaker on Herbs and Herbal medicine and he also runs regular “walk and talk” days at their smallholding in Park Bottom. These days normally incorporate:
Herbs- how to identify and use them, a Herb identification walk, basic conditions that can be treated etc.

As part of any consultation with Tim he includes dietary and lifestyle advice and this may also be of use to sports people especially if they are engaged in physical sports or want guidance on body building. In the past Tim helped a young lady heart transplant patient with diet and lifestyle advice so that she could follow her dream of becoming a woman body builder. She followed a natural diet and supplement regime and reached the finals of the British championships.

Sylvia’s principle therapy is Reflexology which involves the therapeutic massage of a client’s feet or occasionally hands. Sylvia considers the feet to be maps of the body so, as she is massaging the feet she is actively assessing various points and helps correct any imbalances that she feels by applying various types of pressure or manipulation of the corresponding point on the foot. This process is similar to acupressure and it is thought to work in much the same way to clear energy blocks from the body meridians helping bring the body back in to a state of balance.

Many patients find the reflexology extremely relaxing and often fall asleep during the treatment!

Apart from their main therapies Tim also incorporates Flower Essences into many of his remedies or sometimes just treats a patient using these alone especially when the client presents with emotional problems or is a child going through life changes.

Sylvia may include Holistic Crystal therapy along side her Reflexology treatments if she feels it will bring added benefits to the client or again she may offer this as a stand alone treatment.

Holistic Crystal therapy is thought to refocus a person’s life force and therefore can be used to treat specific conditions or as an overall system boost. Often various crystals are placed on a clients chakra points to help rebalance their systems.

With the amount of surfers in this part of Cornwall it is not too much of a surprise how many of them suffer with ear complaints especially “surfers’ ear” a condition that comes about from an ear infection that is allowed to stay damp. Many clients find that Hopi ear candles can really help and 2-3 treatments normally are sufficient for them to resume their sport. Other conditions that Thermal Auricular Therapy can help include- sinusitis, tinnitus, and ear pressure problems especially if they have come about as a result of a wax build up.
Finally, both Tim and Sylvia are Reiki Masters. Reiki comes from the Japanese and it means universal life energy. Reiki heals by charging negatively affected areas of the bodies’ energy field (the aura) with positive energy. Reiki practitioners use Reiki to rebalance these vibrations in the affected parts of the body.
